Semba – The origin of Kizomba

Semba is the oldest known dance of Angola and is considered the direct ancestor of Kizomba. Its roots go back centuries and are closely tied to the history and identity of the Angolan people.
The name „Semba“ refers to the „Umbigada“ movement – a belly-touch step that marks the transition from one dancer to the next. In Angola's villages and cities, Semba was the community dance, where people of all ages gathered in the squares.
Semba music is lively, rhythmic, and full of energy. Played with traditional instruments like the Dikanza (a rasp) and later with guitars and percussion, Semba tells stories of love, everyday life, and resistance. To this day, Semba remains an integral part of Angolan celebrations.
Kizomba developed when Semba musicians began adopting slower, more romantic rhythms and producing them with electronic instruments. Those who dance Semba dance the root of Kizomba – both dances complement each other and are taught together at the Kizomba Tanzschule Berlin.
